Richard Lee (Brentford FC, England U21) is the man spearheading this project and here are his thoughts on the GK Icon approach.

''I have been fortunate to gather together a fantastic array of goalkeepers past and present to throw in ideas on what is required to reach the very top of the modern game.

I can promise that a goalkeeping session with GK Icon will be different from anything you will have done before; we will place more emphasis on speed, agility and spring than anyone and can promise that you will feel more powerful and confident in your game than ever before.

In England there is a stereotypical idea of an English keeper being tall and immobile, but the keepers we want to create would be more in the mould of an Iker Cassillas, Shay Given or Pepe Reyna. The reason I mention these names are due to the way they play the game - they truly are athletes possessing all the ingredients that are desired in the modern goalkeeper.

To use Pepe Reina as an example: he has solid technique when it comes to handling but the beauty of his game is the speed at which he does everything, he is one of Liverpool’s most creative players, his side volley is exquisite and a fantastic weapon when building an attack. He’s positive on claiming crosses and has the ability to make game changing saves just to mention a few of his attributes.

GK Icon Training Methods

GK Icon training methods will focus on techniques such as the variety of distribution open to a goalkeeper; we’ll give you techniques and drills that will increase the explosive power in your legs so that you make saves like never before.

We’ll help improve diving technique so that you have no fear in throwing yourself knowing that you’ll land gracefully, and most importantly we’ll try to instil in you the positive attitude and confidence that we know is vital to any keeper who has ambitions of reaching the top.

Alongside the weekly workshops we will also be running camps in the UK and abroad, not to mention our innovative ‘GKCV’ throughout the year for the truly dedicated.
